DEPRESSION: More than sadness

Depression is one of the mood disorders which includes the feeling of sadness for the loss of interest in activities that were enjoyed earlier, loss of appetite, difficulty in problem-solving and decision making. Depression can be acute to chronic and chronic depression may look like dementia ( loss of memory with other symptoms). Severe depression may also result in suicide. There are many factors that can cause depression in which includes-

  • loss or bereavement
  • Stress
  • Broken marriage
  • Trauma
  • Other physical illnesses

 Self-care is very important along with the pharmacological and therapies to treat depression.  Some of the things which can be done are as follows:

  • Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation
  • Exercise and yoga can be done
  • Eating healthy food which includes lots of fruits and vegetables and avoiding junk and packaged food
  • Avoiding alcohol
  • Journaling the negative thoughts
  • Engage in small activities and self appreciating the activities that have been completed.
  • One can engage themselves in healthy coping mechanisms such as talking to people, having a chat, discussing what they are feeling.

Social life plays an important role so one can engage in various social events like volunteering and engaging in social support groups which will keep the negative thoughts away and help to move forward in life.
